This BS program at UMD focuses on environmental monitoring, soil and water science, ecological engineering, and ecosystem restoration. Students learn to design and apply environmental technologies that address challenges in agriculture, conservation, and sustainability. With a blend of fieldwork, lab work, and computer modeling, students gain hands-on skills in data analysis, sensor deployment, and environmental system design. Graduates enter roles in environmental engineering, regulatory agencies, or land use consulting.
Designing a constructed wetland for wastewater treatment
Soil remediation techniques for heavy metal contamination
Using drones for agricultural land monitoring and mapping
Assessment of bioremediation techniques for oil spills
Modeling stormwater runoff reduction using green infrastructure
Evaluating soil nutrient levels with IoT-enabled sensors
Design of buffer zones for improving agricultural water quality
Building an automated irrigation system using moisture sensors
Ecological engineering project for restoring riparian buffers
Water quality analysis of local streams over seasonal cycles
Comparison of composting techniques for organic waste
Testing and mapping of urban soil lead contamination
Analyzing climate adaptation strategies in farm management
