Project Ideas for Bachelor of Science in African and African American Studies

Interdisciplinary immersion in Black histories, cultures, and global futures.

🏛 Introduction

Blending history, political economy, performance, and data science, Duke’s BS in African and African American Studies empowers students to analyze the past while designing equitable futures. The curriculum traces trans-Atlantic migrations, colonial resistance movements, and contemporary diasporic creativity across literature, hip-hop, and digital activism. Students conduct oral-history interviews in Durham’s Hayti neighborhood, use GIS to visualize redlining’s health impacts, and prototype policy briefs that center Afrofuturist ethics. A senior studio pairs scholars with community organizations in Ghana, Johannesburg, or the U.S. South, translating research into public scholarship and advocacy.
